What To Expect
The program begins at PUC Chile Campus San Joaquín, where scholars will establish a strong academic foundation through interactive workshops led by PUC Chile professors and Research and Beyond docents. These sessions introduce key concepts in sustainability, water systems, and research methodologies that will guide students throughout the experience. From Santiago, the program extends to one of PUC Chile’s premier field research stations, offering students direct exposure to Chile’s diverse environmental contexts.
A highlight of the program is the PUC Chile Atacama Station in Alto Patache, located in one of the driest regions on Earth. Here, scientists investigate innovative techniques for harvesting water from fog and explore their practical applications for local communities. Scholars will engage directly with researchers, observe field experiments, and examine how science can address critical water challenges in extreme environments.
Throughout the program—and again upon their return to Santiago—students will collect data, reflect on their experiences, and synthesize their learning. The experience culminates in a final interactive presentation delivered at the PUC Chile Campus San Joaquín in Santiago, Chile, where scholars will share their research, insights, and fieldwork outcomes. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, recognizing their achievement in this rigorous and transformative global learning experience.
Scholars will spend the first week at PUC San Joaquin, located within Santiago Metropolitan Region, attending classes and activities and interacting with local experts in preparation for their experience in Alto Patache in the northern part of the country. Students will also participate in local cultural activities.
The group travels to Iquique and spends one day in this coastal city on the north to settle in and prepare for the fieldwork ahead.
In this protected area south of Iquique, PUC Atacama station operates a long-term research hub where scholars will spend 5 days attending immersive classes and doing field work. Before heading back to Santiago, they will have a final day of debriefing and reflection.
After returning from Alto Patache, scholars will engage in cultural activities and work on their project presentations. They will also visit PUC Global Field Station in Las Cruces on the coast. For one day to explore coastal marine ecology, sustainable management and conservation.
